Lucy is an elderly Jack Russel Terrier who had a rough life. She came to us because the woman who took her in was no longer able to afford her care or able to feed her due to sudden life changes. Prior to that Lucy had been passed around and not cared for, her history was lost and she seemed to have little interest in most things - at first.
After coming to us it didn't take long to realize that something was not right with Lucy. We found she had worms and treated her for immediately. She also was put on treatment for her hips as she had stiffness and trouble walking. She did also have incontinence and some slight dementia, however she settled in after getting used to the routine and started to be more at ease. She showed us all that she loved soft warm beds, adored chewing on bones that were larger than her and liked to prance around. With her age she was not put in the adoptable section - however a miracle came for Lucy. A woman who has an amazing heart for elderly dogs, who had one other elderly small dog had just lost her Jack Russel Terrier. Lucy pulled so strongly at her heart strings she just had to meet her, and immediately you could tell there was a connection. Lucy was licking her face, comfortable around the other pup, and cuddling up. We knew this was a special circumstance and that Lucy had found where she belonged. Lucy went home that day, to her forever home where she'll have all the attention and focus on her. She will finally after 15 years get the love and undivided attention she'd deserved all her life. We're so happy as Lucy needed a very very special home and deserved to have more love packed into one day than you could pack into a year. Happy forever home, Lucy dear. *update* Due to unforeseen circumstances, health and safety of Lucy and her mom, we've taken Lucy back into the sanctuary forever where she continues to happily live with us! *update* Lucy had an amazing loving life for nearly another year and her previous mum checked in with her. She bonded greatly with one of the sanctuary owners and was the sweetest thing! She eventually had worsening dementia and crossed the rainbow bridge in her sanctuary care takers arms, loved and having had a great sanctuary family.

Ladd was a horse that was used as a ranch working horse. He didn't even have a name in his 14 years of life prior to coming to us. He was simply a number, and once the rancher was no longer in need of work horses he was left in a field. Left out in that field he had malnutrition and lack of care. The land owners said he was uncatchable, and that if we could get him we they'd be happy for us to take him. I walked into the pasture area, walked up and asked him if he'd like to leave. He let me guide him out without any fight or issue!
At first he was fearful of the alpacas, but after time integrating him in slowly he happily joined all the other animals and would run around with the goats, alpacas, dogs, chickens and more. He turned out to be a real sweetheart, fully ridable and picked up all the basics quite quickly. Ladd met his dream home in a wonderful couple who provide him with everything he could ever have dreamt of! This couple had been looking for the perfect fit for awhile and put a lot of patience into finding the right horse for them. He also made friends with a new type of animal, cows! His transformation of just being worked and knowing no other life to trusting people was wonderful. Our volunteers played a huge role in helping Ladd find trust in humans, and with this wonderful couple he now can bond. He follows people around like a puppy in the field and loves treats and butt scratches. We're so glad that the rest of his life will be long spent with an amazing home and going out to explore new trails. Lucy is one of the sweetest goats you'd ever have met, and tallest! She towered over all the other goats, and even the mini horses. Lucy was pulled from a severe neglect home along with the other animals. She was drastically underweight, anemic, needed worming and her hooves had grown into layers of multiple hooves. Her recovery was slow and at her age we were unsure how well she would fair from all the change and treatment.
It turned out that Lucy was the greatest adventurer of all the goats! She would be the first to explore a new area, or squish down a fence. She didn't mind being on her own as long as she had a herd to sleep with but would help the other goats get around too and watch out for them all. Most of all she adored having attention from people and getting treats and scratches. It wasn't long before Lucy really started to recovery and do quite well, although it was evident she was definitely an elderly lady. She had so much more life to give despite being older that she was eventually placed as adoptable. A family soon messaged about Lucy and asked if she needed a home still. They offered her a wonderful home, space to roam, lovely warm shelters, and a herd of goats like her. When Lucy was scheduled to go down to her new potential home, she was greeted by an entire family welcoming party! She fit in immediately and we all knew she'd hit the jackpot. Especially when their pygmy goat was flirting up a storm and all the other goats were happy to accept Lucy right away. She now has a home full of respectful loving kids, a wonderful goat dad, a loving goat mom and many goat family herd members. We're so glad all her last days for however long will be filled with more joy than she could imagine! Happy forever home, Lucy! |
